Crocheting a shawl

Mrs. Ide gave me two absolutely lovely shawls that she was planning to throw out. I have made this pattern before (she shared the instructions with me years ago) and really find it elegant and special. Depending on the yarn, this can come out soft and fluffy for evening or sturdy and warm for a quick run to the market. It is a lot of fun to make as the shawl grows as you make it and the flowers appear row by row. Any of you who are heading into cold autumn and winter nights and have a crochet hook, give it a try!

Chain nine stitches and make 4 double crochet stitches in the second chain stitch from the tail.

Add two more chain stitches and make 1 triple crochet stitch in the last chain from the original chain (at the tail). Make 6 chain stitches and turn.

*{Make 4 double crochet stitches; 1 in the top of the triple crochet stitch, 2 in the chain opening and 1 in the top of the double crochet stitch.} Chain 9.

**{Make 4 double crochet stitches; 1 in the top of the last double crochet, 2 in the chain opening, 1 in the third chain. Chain 2 and triple crochet stitch in the same chain stitch. Make 6 chain stitches and turn.}

Repeat from*{}

Chain 4. Single crochet 1 stitch at top of the arch. Chain 4.

Repeat **{}.

Repeat from*{}.

Chain 5. Make 3 single crochet stitches; 1 at the edge of the loop (on the row below) 1 in the single stitch below and 1 at the edge of the next loop. Chain 5.

Repeat from **{}.

Repeat from *{}.

Chain 8. Make 5 single stitches in the same fashion as above; 1 at the edge of the loop, 3 in the single stitches below, and 1 at the edge of the loop again.

Repeat from **{}.

Repeat from *{}.

+{Chain 2. Make 4 double crochet stitches in the loop below (starting at the top of the last double stitch.)}

Chain 7. Make 3 single crochet stitches in the center of the stitches below. Chain 7.

++{Make 4 double crochet stitches in the loop below (ending at the top of the first double stitch.) Chain 2.}

Repeat from **{}.

Repeat from *{}. Repeat from +{} making an extra opening (now you have 3) with double stitches and 2 chain stitches.

Chain 7. Make 1 single crochet stitch in the center of the single stitches below. Chain 7.

Repeat from ++{} making an extra opening again.

Repeat from **{}.

Oh dear... I do hope you are getting this because I am getting confused. Anyway, you keep making the pattern with openings on either side of the flower petatls (1,3,5,7,5,3,1) with double stitches and 2 chain stitches. At the top of the flower you close it with 2 chain stitches again.

The last row you must make those openings (7 across) and then 4 double stitches at the top of the flower.

And at the next row you need to add new flower loops at the beginning of the row and above the first flower. In this way the flowers keep coming up the sides as the shawl grows.

Oh glory! Maybe this was too big an endeavor to blog about. I haven't got time right now to check these instructions. Let me know if it is wrong~!

It really is a pretty shawl...
